Abstract

-Abstract-
This study was designed to elucidate the factors inducing alkaline phosphatase
expression in healthy gingival and periodontal ligament fibroblasts. The cells incubated
with/without serum or growth factors (PDGF and IGF-I) were analysed by MTT assay
and ALP activity assay.
The results are as follows:
1. The withdrawal of serum from human gingival and PDL fibroblasts caused a
decrease in the cell proliferation and increase in the ALP expression.
2. ALP expression induced by serum withdrawal is inversely correlated with cellular
activity.
3. ALP expression induced by serum withdrawal is decreased by the application of low
concentrations of PDGF and IGF-I.
4. IGF-I enhances the ALP activity of human gingival and periodontal ligament
fibroblasts apparently.
